The Long Journey of the Nez Perce by Kevin Carson
The author will be talking about the Nez Perce War of 1877 and historical connections to the region.
Walla Walla and Dayton served as important communications and logistics hubs during the war with dispatch and telegraph traffic passing through to the Department of the Columbia in Vancouver, Washington.
The Long Journey of the Nez Perce was written with an eye for the path through the story and the research covers some important and neglected areas. Specifically, Carson studied the tactics of the combatants and the effect of terrain and training on the outcome.
"I took time to highlight some of the strong Native and pioneer women who were swept up in the struggle. There are even a few romances. I used every reference I could to uncover fascinating stories and motivations of these people caught up in the tragedy. At the end of the day it is the most compelling story possible and that made the task easier for me. You can't help but care." -- Kevin Carson
