The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes

Title:  The Sense of an Ending

Author: Julian Barnes

Julian Barnes' The Sense of an Ending is a novel about memory and loss in late middle age. The novel is told from the point of view of Tony, a fundamentally decent person whose one fault is his emotional reserve. Tony ruins his relationship with Veronica, who leaves Tony for his friend Adrian. Tony cuts both out of his life and shortly thereafter, Adriane commits suicide. 40 years later Tony receives an unexpected bequest of £500 from Veronica's mother, and he begins to realize that he fundamentally misunderstood what happened four decades ago. The novel is spare (just over 150 pages) and with this leanness comes an agility of prose and a depth of emotion rarely reached in more padded works.
