Spokane is a spirited riverfront city with a rich and colorful history, vibrant arts scene, natural beauty, and plenty of quirks. And it’s getting discovered. Long overshadowed by the larger and more metropolitan Seattle and Portland, Oregon, eclectic Spokane and its surrounding county by the same name are becoming tourist destinations in their own right. In fact, many people end up staying. For Pig Out in the Park. For Pie and Whiskey. For Bloomsday, Hoopfest, and an expansive downtown park that once welcomed the world. In 1974, Spokane made history, becoming the smallest city to ever host a World’s Fair.
Today, it’s growing. The second-largest city in Washington state jumped from 208,916 people in 2010 to 228,989 in 2020, an increase of nearly 10 percent. Spokane County increased even more from 2010 to 2020, climbing from 471,221 to 539, 339, or a hike of 14.5 percent. The arts, culture, and culinary capital of the Inland Northwest, Spokane, also known as the Lilac City, is not to be missed. Its collection of distinctive neighborhoods radiates from downtown, where a picturesque river complete with waterfalls runs through the heart of the metropolis. Spokane — its other nickname is River City — features a down-to-earth Pacific Northwest vibe. Spokanites are approachable and unpretentious. And the city itself is a lot of fun.
