Author Event: July 13, 2024 from 11am to 2pm

Please join us on July 13, 2024 from 11am to 2pm when author Kelley Messinger will be signing copies of his book Walls of Secrecy.

From the back of the book:

Pressure Punks. Bikers. Kids. Lifers. Dings. Girls. Dealers. Everyone fit into one prison group or another, sometimes more than one group. In 1971 I had to figure out where I was going to fit, and becoming a Biker had a huge impact on my survival. My name is Kelley D. Messinger and I lived a decade in maximum security at Washington State Penitentiary. This is my story.

Twenty-three-year old Kelley D. Messinger was convicted in Washington in the early 1970s of killing his teen-aged wife. This book is his memoir of his decade in prison and the maximum-security unit at Washington State Penitentiary. Chronicling a ludicrous prison governance system, this book captures the life of prisoners including social hierarchy, survival rules, violence, rape, murder, and defense tactics. The book’s characters, his fellow prisoners as well as prison administration and staff, are in many cases, stranger than could be invented by a fiction writer. However, Mr. Messinger’s undefeated will to survive in this environment colors the tone of the book with his humorous, witty and grounding perspective.

Ultimately Mr. Messinger’s case was brought to the attention of Washington Governor Dixy Lee Ray, who happened to be touring a Washington State Trooper’s Academy. Her interest in Mr. Messinger’s conviction was piqued when she heard the investigation used to convict him was used as a case study for how NOT to investigate crimes. When she inquired as to the outcome of the criminal trial, she learned Mr. Messinger was then serving a life sentence in maximum security. Before Governor Ray left office, she exonerated Mr. Messinger.

Please join us on Saturday, June 29, 2024 from 11am to 2pm when author Joyce Byers Hill will be signing copies of the book Building Dreams.

About the book…

Matt Phoenix and Aiden Byers came from very different backgrounds, but they thought of each other as brothers. After an apprenticeship at Byers Construction, Matt said he wanted to try building houses someday. Aiden suggested they do it together. They were learning a lot from Aiden’s dad and uncle, and their first house project was going well. Then disaster struck. Would they be able to pick up the pieces of their dream and move on?

Bailey Campbell and her younger sister Emma never liked living in the big city. When Bailey decided to apply for an Associate Pastor position in a small town on the other side of the state, Emma rode along to keep her company. Why did the name of the town sound so familiar to her? Would the Campbell sisters be leaving the city and building their dreams in a place called Hope?

Building Dreams is a story of hope, healing, and second chances. It shows us that it’s never too late to start over. And it reminds us just how big our dreams can be when we allow God to lead our lives.

Author Event: Saturday, November 4, 2023 from 11am to 2pm

Please join us on Saturday, November 4, 2023 from 11am to 2pm when author Marleen Ramsey will be signing copies of My Mother Told Me Stories.

The story starts in the voice of 10-year-old Megan as she remembers the adventures of growing up in Walla Walla, a town in the southeastern corner of Washington State in the early 1960s. Megan has the usual struggles of growing up that most children have, but her concerns are complicated with the reality that she is half-Japanese and half-White. She also struggles with one concern that is unique to her and that is to understand why her mother is overly-protective and hovering, so different from the mothers of her friends. The mystery grows when she discovers pictures of her mother standing with a little Asian girl that she had never seen before in front of a drab and desolate looking building somewhere in an empty and arid landscape. On the back of the picture is written, Minidoka, 1943.

The second section of the book is written in a third voice narrative of what Megan’s mother, Hitomi, experiences after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the heart-breaking disruptions that turn her life upside down. Hitomi’s pre-war life is destroyed and she must re-build her future from the ashes of the past. This is a story of ordinary people, focusing centrally on one woman’s experience of extreme discrimination and disruption of her life. But it is also a story of surprising kindness, generosity, and friendship, of forgiveness and reconciliation, and the enduring love of family.

The final chapter of the book resolves the mystery of the sister Megan never knew she had and Hitomi’s reconciliation to the tragedy and loss she experienced during her incarceration at Minidoka.
