She’s Strong But She’s Tired by R.H. Sin

Title:  She’s Strong But She’s Tired

Author:  R.H. Sin

Review: I don’t typically read poetry, nor do I understand it easily, but I really enjoyed this poetry book. For women who have dealt with difficult times, particularly emotional manipulation, I highly recommend. Sometimes it can help you heal simply knowing others can relate.

Review:
When three troubled people's lives cross, no matter their ages or backgrounds, you never know what will happen. Maybe it will be magic! At the very least it's not boring! Set in Hood River, Oregon, this book is a wonderful read.  I highly recommend it.

Spear by Nicola Griffith

Title:  Spear
Author: Nicola Griffith
Review:
Well, it’s official— Spear has ruined my enjoyment of any other stories that involve re-tellings of Arthurian legend, because it was just that glorious! The prose is absolutely beautiful, the characters feel realistic and gritty, and the mythology is enchanting. Peretur’s story had me hooked by the second page, and I simply can’t recommend this short (but wondrous) story enough! Review by:  Jo

One Great Lie by Deb Caletti

Title:  One Great Lie
Author: Deb Caletti
Review: Charlotte wants nothing more than to be a writer, so when she wins a scholarship to study under her literary idol in a summer abroad program, she can barely believe her luck. Not only that, the program takes place in Venice, where the women in her family rumor that her ancestor Isabella di Angelo wrote a world-famous poem, only to have it stolen by Tasso. Charlotte hopes that she can excel in the program while simultaneously solving her family’s longtime mystery. That is, until her mentor turns out to be as dangerous to her as Tasso was to Isabella. This story is not light-hearted, as it includes topics like sexism and sexual assault, but it highlights the strength women can find when they build each other up.

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

Title:  Remarkably Bright Creatures

Author: Shelby Van Pelt

Review: This is the story of Tova Sullivan, who begins working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium to help cope with the death of her husband.  One evening she rescues Marcellus, a Giant Pacific Octopus, after he had escaped from his aquarium.  This begins a friendship with this "remarkably bright creature" that may reveal surprising information about her son's disappearance during a boat trip in the Puget Sound over 30 years earlier.  I loved this book!

Review:  Every time I thought I knew where this book would go, a twist would emerge and take the story in a very different direction than I thought. The delightfully unexpected journey within these pages is, though at times brutal, a wonderful and magical one!

Daughters of the Occupation by Shelly Sanders

Title:  Daughters of the Occupation

Author: Shelly Sanders

Review: All families have their secrets. Sarah is shocked and horrified of all the tragic nightmares her mother and grandmother had to endure at the hands of first the Russians, then the Nazis. When she discovers she has a uncle that was left behind, she journeys to find him. This is a tale of pain of heroism, and of family. Such a amazing read.

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

Title:  Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

I’m honestly not even sure how Black Sun has managed to meet every single one of my completely unrealistic expectations for the perfect fantasy novel! Everything about this book is wonderful, but I think the world building and characters stand especially bright. The story has everything; prophecies, gods, mermaids, pirates, and a cast of fascinating characters who all have their own unique goals. This should definitely be on your list of fantasy novels to read in the very near future.

Women Who Risk by Tom and Joann Doyle

Title: Women Who Risk  by Tom and Joann Doyle

Review:  This book is a collection of 7 real stories, told by the women themselves who lived through them. We get to watch as women are freed from nightmares, rage, abuse, and shame after giving their lives to Christ. An inside look at the heavy persecution Christians face in Muslim countries, these women’s stories are an inspiration to fellow believers.

Terciel & Elinor by Garth Nix

Title:  Terciel & Elinor
Author: Garth Nix
Review: This book has all of my favorite elements: magical plots, romance, mystery, and, most importantly of all— Mogget the cat! It was such a joy to read about how Sabriel’s parents met, as well as the details of their own individual life stories, and I particularly enjoyed Terciel’s characterization and his approach towards being the Abhorsen-in-waiting.    Review by:  Jo

The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore

Title:  The Woman They Could Not Silence
Author: Kate Moore
Review: This biography is absolutely fascinating! Written in novel form based on well-researched articles and journal entries, Moore introduces us to Elizabeth Packard, a mother whose intelligence and boldness landed her in an insane asylum. Packard is now remembered as an advocate for the rights of women and those accused of insanity. I highly recommend!    Review by:  Bethany

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte P. Gilman

Title:  The Yellow Wallpaper

Author: Charlotte P. Gilman

Review:

I thought this classic short story was absolutely fascinating, in a slightly terrifying sense. In diary-entry format, we watch as a young mother suffering from depression is slowly driven mad. Written as a critique of “rest cure” often prescribed to women in the 1800s, Gilman’s most famous work is a chilling one to remember.
